I have a fantastic podcast for y’all, but I can’t figure out the audio editing software on my computer! Until tomorrow, here’s one of the songs we featured on it for tonight’s Late Night Listening.

Sean Padilla of The Cocker Spaniels was generous enough to share a few tracks from the new album Sometimes You’ve Got To Fight To Get A Bit Of Peace. The album came out this past Tuesday, and I’m proud to share my favorite song called Gimme Back My Red Pen.

There is music and then there is music. I discovered the music that Muhsinah makes on a late night webbing stint early 2009. I had just re-discovered 21st Century Maroon Colony and somehow ended up on her myspace. I couldn’t get on the mailing list fast enough.

Time flew and now Muhsinah is making more music and a short film. This is epic y’all. “Dear _____ ,” – The Debut Studio Album + Independent Short Film By Muhsinah is on Kickstarter now and Team Muhsinah needs to raise $31,000 to fund the project. Please support this work in anyway you can.

Although it’s been commercialized (peace to FIFA, right?), this song is still beautiful to me.

Somi Loves You

In the middle of my fascination with Nneka, I came across the beautiful and talented singer, Somi.

A true multicultural woman, Somi was born in Illinois to immigrants from Rwanda and Uganda, then spent her early childhood in Zambia. The African cultural legacy, always crucial to her sound, is as vital as ever in her current music, which Somi likes to call New African Soul.

At this moment, I’d like to flash my late pass because Soul Discoveries and ymib each have interviewed Somi over a year ago. Somi herself blogs fairly regularly about her travels, music and life.

Her latest album, If The Rains Come first definitely complements Nneka’s hip hop sounds and lyrics. Check out Somi’s website and enjoy this video playlist of her performances!
