Kayla Jones

In her blog description, Kayla Jones writes, “My life is my biggest art project.” And in fact, her vibrant graphics and art bring life to whatever brand she’s designing, don’t you agree?

I especially love her treatment of the brand Ghana.

You can see more of her work on Behance, Flickr, Vimeo and her blog.  Leave a comment or two on her work while you’re at it! Tell her we sent you ;)

Afrogalaxy, Enamel on Paper, 96″X104″ 2007

There are millions of ways to tell your stories, to carve out the meaning of your existence in this lifetime. Mequitta Ahuja’s work is a fascinating blend of storytelling and painting. In her own words:

I refer to my ongoing project as Automythography. A variation of author Audre Lorde’s 1982 coined term, Automythography combines history, myth and personal narrative. My process begins with private performances in front of the camera. Through both inward and outward gaze, posture and dress, I position myself as agent of my own depiction. I document these performances using a remote shutter control and use the resulting photographs as non-fictional source material. Through preliminary drawings, I add invented elements. The resulting self-portraits embody a means of self-invention and creative self-sufficiency.

My jaw literally dropped when I found her work through Bianca’s tumblr called beauty in the small.

FILM: African Booty Scratcher

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

The phrase “African Booty Scratcher” is, for me, a very interesting one. It was what we were called by our African American peers growing up in the 1990s. As children of African immigrants and African immigrants ourselves we had this curious place in between cultures where we would soon begin to carve out ways to tell stories of our own.

Found on Liberator Magazine Nikyatu Jusu gives the world this beautiful film on that space in between. I like the way it’s resolved, the little nuances of the African mother, the jolof rice, the nosy little brother. All of it: #thatsafrican!

Support Nikyatu Jusu and Liberator Magazine by checking out their websites and spreading the story.

Voraciously Afrolicious: Michelle DeLuca

Monday, November 30th, 2009

When my sisters and I were younger, we were avid readers. And by avid I mean voracious. And by voracious I mean your books were not safe in our hands. I haven’t made reading as important in my life these days, but I do love when I come across art and design that interacts with the act of reading.

I think Michelle DeLuca does this well with her work where text becomes art, art becomes the story.  Besides, isn’t it about time the novel got a reboot? Where

Here’s some of her stuff for your mind. Make sure to check out her blog!
